Wheeler Ray Jones, raised on the Nez Perce Reservation, ย comes from a family where traditional skills like beading, cooking, and crochet were taught as essential ways to sustain and empower oneself. Though he once resisted learning the art of beadwork, his path led him back to this tradition while incarcerated at Orofino. Mentored by experienced artists, he discovered not only a talent but a deep connection to his culture through each bead he placed.
ย
Within just a few months, his natural skill shone brightly. His first entries โ two pairs of hand-beaded earrings โ won blue ribbons at the Lumberjack Days competition, standing out among veteran artisans. Today, his beadwork reflects resilience, growth, and cultural pride. Each piece tells a story of transformation and the enduring strength of Nez Perce traditions.
